Agreement to Terms
By accessing or using FormaTeX, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you are using FormaTeX on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these terms.
If you do not agree to any part of these terms, you may not access or use our services.
Description of Services
FormaTeX provides a REST API that compiles LaTeX documents into PDF files. Our services include:
- Synchronous and asynchronous LaTeX-to-PDF compilation
- Support for pdflatex, xelatex, lualatex, and latexmk engines
- API key management and usage tracking via a web dashboard
- Plan-based compilation quotas and rate limiting
- A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for AI assistant integrations
We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of our services at any time, with reasonable notice where practicable.
Account Registration
To use most features of FormaTeX, you must create an account. You agree to:
- Provide accurate, current, and complete registration information
- Maintain the security of your account credentials and API keys
- Notify us immediately of any unauthorized access to your account
- Accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account
You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. We reserve the right to refuse registration or cancel accounts at our discretion.
Acceptable Use
You agree not to use FormaTeX for any of the following purposes:
- Attempting to exploit or circumvent the LaTeX sandbox, including use of shell escape, pipe commands, or input/output redirection
- Submitting LaTeX designed to cause excessive resource consumption or denial-of-service conditions
- Compiling content that violates applicable law, including material that facilitates fraud, harassment, or illegal activity
- Reverse engineering, decompiling, or attempting to extract source code from our services
- Reselling or sublicensing API access without our written permission
- Sharing API keys publicly or allowing unauthorized third parties to use your account
- Using automated tools to probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of our systems
Violation of these terms may result in immediate account suspension or termination without refund.
API Usage & Rate Limits
API access is subject to the rate limits and compilation quotas defined by your plan. Plan limits are enforced at the application level and documented on our pricing page.
Free plan users are hard-blocked upon reaching their monthly compilation limit. Paid plan users may exceed their quota with continued access, subject to overage billing where applicable.
We reserve the right to throttle or block API access that disproportionately affects the quality of service for other users, even within plan limits.
Compilation files — LaTeX source and PDF output — are ephemeral and deleted immediately after delivery. We make no guarantees about file retention and you should not rely on FormaTeX for document storage.
Billing & Subscriptions
Paid plans are billed monthly or annually in advance. All billing is processed by Polar.sh, which acts as Merchant of Record and handles payment processing and applicable taxes.
Subscription changes
You may upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your subscription at any time through the billing portal. Downgrades take effect at the end of the current billing period. Upgrades take effect immediately.
Refunds
We offer refunds on a case-by-case basis for service failures attributable to FormaTeX. We do not issue refunds for unused compilation quota within a billing period.
Plan downgrades
Downgrading to a lower plan may result in loss of access to features, engine options, or higher rate limits available on your current plan.
Intellectual Property
The FormaTeX API, dashboard, documentation, and all associated software are the property of FormaTeX and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws.
Your LaTeX source documents and the PDF output you compile are your own. We make no claim to ownership of any content you submit to the API. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to process your LaTeX input solely for the purpose of providing the compilation service.
The FormaTeX name, logo, and trademarks may not be used without our prior written consent.
Disclaimer of Warranties
FormaTeX is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. We do not warrant that compilation output will be identical across different engines or TeX Live versions.
Some jurisdictions do not allow exclusion of implied warranties, so the above exclusion may not apply to you.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, FormaTeX shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of our services.
Our total liability for any claim arising out of these terms or your use of FormaTeX shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless FormaTeX and its affiliates, officers, agents, and employees from any claim, liability, or demand, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of your use of the service, your violation of these terms, or your violation of any third-party rights.
Termination
You may delete your account at any time from the account settings. Deletion removes your personal data within 30 days, subject to our retention policy for billing records and audit logs.
We may suspend or terminate your account immediately, without notice, if we determine that you have violated these terms, engaged in fraudulent activity, or pose a risk to other users or the integrity of our service.
Upon termination, your right to access FormaTeX immediately ceases. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination — including intellectual property, disclaimers, and limitation of liability — will survive.
Governing Law
These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of FormaTeX shall be resolved through good-faith negotiation before resorting to formal legal proceedings.
Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms of Service from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and notify registered users by email. Your continued use of FormaTeX after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
If you disagree with any changes, you may delete your account before the updated terms take effect.
