Cookie Policy

This policy explains how FormaTeX uses cookies and browser storage when you use our website and API dashboard.

Last updated: March 2026

What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website when you visit it. They are widely used to make websites work, remember your preferences, and provide information to website owners.

FormaTeX is a developer API product. We take a minimal approach to cookies and browser storage — we use only what is strictly necessary to operate the service.

How We Use Cookies

We use browser storage (cookies and localStorage) solely for the following purposes:

  • Keeping you signed in during your session
  • Storing your authentication token securely between page loads
  • Preserving your user preferences within the dashboard

We do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking. We use browser localStorage for product analytics (PostHog) to improve the service.

Essential Cookies

The only cookies we set are essential for the authentication and session management of the dashboard. Without these, you would be unable to stay logged in between page navigations.

NamePurposeExpiry
auth_tokenStores your JWT for authenticated dashboard access24 hours
themeStores your UI theme preference (dark mode)1 year
formatex_cookie_consentStores your analytics consent choice (accepted or declined) — strictly necessary to honour your preference1 year

These cookies are strictly necessary and cannot be disabled while using the dashboard. If you delete them, you will be signed out.

Local Storage

In addition to cookies, the FormaTeX dashboard uses browser localStorage for session data and analytics. This storage is local to your browser and is never transmitted to third parties directly.

KeyPurposeExpiry
ph_*PostHog analytics — stores anonymous session identity and event queue. Only set after you accept analytics cookies.1 year

Third-Party Services

FormaTeX integrates with the following third-party services that may set their own cookies or use browser storage:

Polar.sh

When you visit the Polar.sh billing portal (accessed via the billing section of your dashboard), Polar.sh may set cookies necessary for their payment flow. These cookies are governed by Polar's Privacy Policy.

GitHub / Google OAuth

If you choose to sign in via GitHub or Google, those providers may set cookies as part of their OAuth flow. These are governed by the respective privacy policies of GitHub and Google. FormaTeX does not control these cookies.

PostHog

With your consent, FormaTeX uses PostHog for product analytics — tracking page views, feature usage, and compilation events to improve the product. PostHog stores analytics data in your browser's localStorage. Events are proxied through our own domain and processed by PostHog (US region). You can withdraw consent at any time by declining via the cookie banner. For more information, see PostHog's Privacy Policy.

Sentry

FormaTeX uses Sentry for error monitoring and performance tracking. When an error occurs in the application, Sentry captures technical diagnostic data — stack traces, browser information, and the page you were on — to help us diagnose and fix issues. Sentry does not receive your LaTeX content or API keys. This is classified as a strictly necessary service for maintaining platform reliability. For more information, see Sentry's Privacy Policy.

We do not integrate advertising or social media tracking scripts. Analytics (PostHog) are only active with your explicit consent.

Managing Cookies

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:

  • View cookies currently stored by websites you visit
  • Delete individual cookies or all cookies
  • Block cookies from specific sites or all sites
  • Set preferences for how cookies are handled

Note that blocking essential cookies will prevent you from signing in to the FormaTeX dashboard. The marketing pages (including this page) do not require cookies to function.

To change your analytics consent, delete the formatex_cookie_consent cookie for formatex.io via your browser's developer tools. The banner will reappear on your next visit and you can make a new choice.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by an updated date at the top of this page. We will notify registered users of material changes by email.

For questions about our approach to data, please also review our Privacy Policy.
